Switch off the screen, kids, it’s time to get cooking! These easy tricks to make cooking with kids fun will not only teach wee tackers great culinary skills, but they could even encourage a new appreciation of healthy vegetables.
Yep, enter the burger. A kid-favourite (and all-round crowd pleaser) guaranteed to lure them in and pique their interest in cooking. Burger aficionado Sarah Robbins, owner and Head Chef at Bar Luca, has partnered with Helga’s to create a series of gourmet gluten free burger recipes that anyone, even wee ones with the help of mum or dad, can replicate at home. Why should those with gluten intolerance or allergies miss out? And, being the generous mum (and burger queen!) that Sarah is, she has kindly shared her easy tricks to make cooking fun and her EPIC Grand S Lamb burger recipe!

Get them prepping
Just like they might set up their action heroes for battle, kids can get involved in the food preparation. “Burgers are easy to assemble, so get the kids to help you with the prep like washing the salad leaves or laying out the ingredients in the bun, to serve,” suggests Sarah.
Make a mess
Yeah baby, let’s get our hands dirty! “Kids love any excuse to get messy in the kitchen! Once they’ve washed their hands, get them mashing up the ground meat and seasonings into burger patties, or mixing up the sauce in a plastic bowel.”
Use the tools
Kitchens are a little like a fun science lab, so encourage those little digits to get their hands on equipment and practice their maths! “Measuring out the ingredients is an essential part of making a good burger,” explains Sarah. “Using weighing scales, ask the children to help you get the right quantities before you start cooking.”
Just add fun…
The kitchen is where maths, science and creativity collide! “Put your sauces into squeeze bottles and let them have fun creating faces on the burgers.” Not enough fun factor? Add toothpicks with cute little flag messages or decorated name tags attached.
‘Cos (gettit, cos lettuce?!) we’re all about fun… “Cut your cheese and vegetables into shapes so they can turn their burgers into a work of art!” suggests Sarah. Yep, those cookie cutters are great for way more than just play dough and biscuits.
GRAND S LAMB
Lamb burger with yoghurt, spinach, pickled onions and crushed almonds
If the kids are adverse to chomping into a steak or chop, try mince lamb with spinach leaves for an iron-packed meal.
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
- 480g course ground lamb mince (80:20 meat to fat ratio), 120g per patty
- 180g Labneh (yoghurt cheese balls)
- 1 red onion
- 50ml cider vinegar
- 20g sugar
- 20g salt
- 4 Helga’s Gluten Free Gourmet Rolls 5 Seed
- 1 bunch English spinach
- 100g crushed roasted almonds
- Place the lamb in a bowl and gently use your fingers to loosen the meat. Using your hands or a metal ring press the meat into four even sized patties. Place them in the fridge to set until needed
- In a saucepan mix the vinegar, sugar and salt and bring to a boil. Thinly slice the red onion and place in the bowl, pour in vinegar and leave to pickle until needed
- Slice the English spinach into thin strips and set aside
- Heat a cast iron pan or grill over a medium-high heat, dip some paper towel in oil and use it to grease the pan/grill. Generously season one side of the patties and place the patties salt side down onto the grill, then season the tops of patties
- Cook the patties for about 5 minutes on one side then flip and cook for a further four minutes.
- Remove the patties from the grill and allow them to rest while you prepare your buns
- Split the Helga’s Gluten Free Gourmet Rolls 5 Seed and place them cut side down onto the grill to toast
- Spread a small amount of Labneh on the bottom bun and place a handful of spinach on the bottom bun. Transfer the patty to the bun, top each patty with two balls of Labneh and spread evenly. Sprinkle the crushed almonds and finish with some pickled onions.
