Detox may be the buzz word on everyone’s lips as we hit summer – as well as mentally preparing to slip into that bikini! But depriving yourself of food and essential nutrients is NOT the way to go about it.
“Everyone wants to look and feel their best for summer and naturally, this is the time of the year most people might consider a detox or cleanse” explains leading health and wellness coach Lee Holmes, who is also a qualified wholefoods chef and the author of a gamut of books including Supercharged Food: Eat Yourself Beautiful.
“These days there are dozens of types of detox programs – from cutting out certain food groups and juice fasts to simply steering clear of alcohol,” she says. Choose wisely. The approaches vary significantly – and you’ll want to enjoy your healthy glow and good gut health with energy and vitality, rather than collapsing in the sand.
Lee has seen a slew of people who get stuck in a diet rut, then opt for the fastest and easiest way to shed the winter kilos as summer approaches. And she stresses that it’s crucial for people to take responsibility for their own wellness. “But whatever program you decide is best for you, there are a few detox dos and don’ts everyone should keep in mind.”
Here they are …
Dry skin brushing
“Dry skin brushing is key to being summer ready and stepping out with glowing, healthy skin,” explains Lee. “Skin is the largest organ in the body and it is responsible for a quarter of the body’s detoxification each day. Exfoliation stimulates skin renewal and removes dead skin. It is also fantastic for reducing cellulite and tightening the skin to prevent premature ageing. By including dry skin brushing into your daily routine, your skin will be looking fresh for this summer season.”
Oil it up
“Coconut oil is perfect for protecting and enhancing the skin’s natural flora. We can use coconut oil in two ways to help detox. You can cleanse away the day’s build-up of dirt and pollution by massaging the oil into your skin and then gently removing the oil that has lifted the dirt away with a damp towel. This will help detoxify and moisturise the skin.”
“The second way coconut oil can be used is in your hair. We all know after those long summer days at the beach our hair can often feel like straw. Massaging coconut oil into your hair can help it strengthen and add lust to your locks.”

You might be tempted to over-indulge at a long overdue family dinner or Christmas party, but it is important to limit your intake because your stomach needs to detox completely before it can begin to heal.”
Only change your food
“Most of the time when people try a detox they often constrain themselves to modifying the food on their plate. Detoxing goes beyond the food on your plate and should be approached as a holistic effort to cleanse the body by including lifestyle habits such as yoga, meditation and exercise.”

Raspberry Spritzer Recipe

- 125 g (41/2 oz/1 cup) frozen raspberries
- 125 ml (4 fl oz/1/2 cup) freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon stevia liquid, or sweetener of your choice
- 500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) sparkling water
- 6 coconut water ice cubes
Place the raspberries in a bowl and squash them with a fork. Set aside for 15 minutes. Transfer the raspberries to a fine mesh sieve, set over a jug. Add the lemon juice, then use the back of a spoon to push the raspberries through the sieve, scraping the outside of the sieve as you go.
Add the stevia and stir well. Add the sparkling water and ice and stir again.
Divide between two glasses and serve with a straw. If the raspberry settles at the bottom of your glass, give it a stir.
